NASDAQ stand for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations System, an American stock market. It was the world’s first electronic stock market founded in 1971 by National Association of Securities Dealer. NASDAQ is the largest electronic screen-based equity securities market in the United States.
With approximately 3,200 companies, it lists more companies and on average trades more shares per day than any other U.S. market .Its main index is the NASDAQ composite, which has been published since its inception. NASDAQ was also the first stock market to advertise to the general public, highlighting NASDAQ-traded companies (usually in technology) and closing with the declaration that NASDAQ is "the stock market for the next hundred years".
NASDAQ is home to companies that are leaders across all areas of business including technology, retail, communications, financial services, transportation, media and biotechnology. "A computerized system established by the NASD to facilitate trading by providing broker/dealer with current bid and ask price quotes on over-the-counter stocks and some listed stocks "NASDAQ does not have a physical trading floor that brings together buyers and sellers. Instead, all trading on the NASDAQ exchange is done over a network of computers and telephones. Even NASDAQ does not employ market specialists to buy unfilled orders like the NYSE does .
The NASDAQ stock market comprises two separate markets, namely the NASDAQ National Market, which trades large, active securities and the NASDAQ Small cap Market that trades emerging growth companies .
