[[News No 1.]]Equities ended lackluster session on a positive note in the absence of cues from global peers. Realty oil&gas and FMCG moved higher while IT and banks bucked the trend.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex ended at 17092.16, up 39.62 points or 0.23 per cent. The index touched a high of 17183.51 and low of 17027.92.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5115.95, up 14.45 points or 0.28 per cent. The index touched a high of 5137.40 and low of 5092.05.

BSE Midcap Index was down 0.11 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.26 per cent lower.

Amongst the sectoral indices BSE Realty Index was up 0.94 per cent and BSE Oil&gas Index moved 0.88 per cent higher. BSE IT Index slipped 0.43 per cent and BSE Bankex declined 0.40 per cent.

Biggest Sensex gainers comprised Hero Honda (3.06%), ACC (2.42%), Jaiprakash Associates (1.71%), Reliance Industries (1.65%) and HDFC (1.48%).

Losers comprised Maruti Suzuki (-1.53%), NTPC (-1.45%), ICICI Bank (-1.27%), Bharti Airtel (-1.08%) and ONGC (-0.86%).
   [[News No 4.]]Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has turned down an offer to partner in the proposed Barmer refinery in Rajasthan due to financial constraints, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada said today.
State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) is in consultations with the Rajasthan government on the feasibility of the refinery, he said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

IOC has regretted its participation as equity partner in the proposed Barmer refinery due to the financial constraints faced by the corporation, he said.

Originally proposed in 2004-05, the project was declared economically unviable after the previous Vasundhara Raje government in Rajasthan did not agree to give fiscal incentive like interest free loan and sales tax exemption for the products to be produced at the 15 million tonnes a year unit.

After Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot renewed the demand of setting up refinery project in the state last year, ONGC decided to do a feasibility study again considering the fiscal concession that the state government was willing to extend to the project.

The Government of Rajasthan has not yet firmed up its nature of assistance for establishing refinery in Barmer, Prasada said.

The refinery was proposed to turn the crude oil produced by Cairn India from its Barmer fields into products. However, considering the fact that the peak oil production from the Cairns Barmer field, where ONGC has 30 per cent stake, was only 8.75 million tonnes, which may last a maximum of seven years, the refinery was considered unviable.   [[News No 2.]]Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Capital Partners said on Tuesday that it along with two other group companies has acquired an additional 4,081 equity shares representing 0.01 per cent stake in Fame India, hiking their stake in the multiplex chain to 13.8 per cent.

On March 8, Reliance MediaWorks, Reliance Capital and Reliance Capital Partners have acquired 4,081 equity shares constituting 0.01 per cent of the equity share capital of Fame at an average price of Rs 83, aggregating to Rs 3.38 lakh, the company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Pursuant to the stake buy, the ADA Group companies now hold 13.8 per cent stake in Fame.

The ADA Group firms have already announced open offer to acquire 2.17 crore shares or 52.72 per cent stake in Fame at Rs 83.40 a share, aggregating to around Rs 180 crore.

The race for Fame heated up after Inox entered into an agreement with the promoters of Fame to acquire their 43.28 per cent stake for Rs 66.48 crore or at Rs 44/45 a share. Inox holds 51 per cent in Fame India and has made an open offer for an additional 20 per cent at Rs 51 per share. If the data on initial public offers (IPOs) in the past two quarters are anything to go by, retail investors are emerging as a smarter lot, even compared with institutional investors that have the backing of in-house research teams.

Among the last 20 IPOs since mid-October 2009, there were nine issues that were fully subscribed by retail investors. Of this eight are currently trading above their issue price. In contrast, of the 13 IPOs fully subscribed by qualified institutional buyers(QIB), just over half are trading above their issue price, shows an ET study.

Some IPOs where retail investors applied for more shares than what was reserved for them, the QIB portion was not fully subscribed include Aqua Logistics, Syncom Healthcare and Thinksoft Global. These scrips last traded on the stock market anywhere at 20-100% higher than the issue price. Out of the eleven IPOs where retail portion was not fully subscribed, seven are trading below issue price.
